MEET THE GIRLS

So we are raising Chicks for the first time ever and I am really enjoying it. These are my girls: Punkin', Lucy, Lolita, Nugget, Loretta Hen, J-Lo (My husband's choice since she had a big puff ball booty when she was a tiny thing), Scarlett, and Rosy. I had no idea that they could be so fun and have such different personalities. You think that their just chickens and they aren't very smart but they actually are pretty smart and very curious. It's been really fun to watch them grow and They grow so fast. They are now 4 weeks old and getting restless. It's supposed to be beautiful today so we are going to try letting them outside in the run for the first time today and try to get them used to it since they will be leaving the indoors for their permanent home outside in a couple weeks. My husband is not quite as attached to them as I am. He just sees them as his future little sweatshop of egg-layers, but to me they are my critters. I can't wait until they get to be outside permanently though because they do create quite a mess for sure. We've introduced one of my labs to the chickens and he seems to find them interesting but he doesn't really care about them…. he is my gentle giant. My other lab Sage is another story. Every time I say chickens she licks her lips and that  makes me nervous, so she has not spent time near them.
And so the little homestead adventure begins. I did recently also take a class on bee keeping and I'm considering that as a future quest, but for now here is what I learned in that class:
1) Bees are crazy complex little creatures
2) Bee keeping is expensive and complicated shit
3)I'm still very much interested in beekeeping, but not anytime soon. I think I'll stick with my chicks for now and see how that goes first :)

Until Later All. It's time to go feed the little ones, and so I'm off for now
Have a wonderful weekend bloggers!

Giving it One more try

I haven't been on blogger for about 4 years now. I had some stuff going on in my life at the time that I decided I didn't want to dive into on a public space. I always wanted this space to be somewhere where I could connect with other like-minded people, share my adventures and give and gain inspiration in the creative sense. I love to garden, hike, kayak, cook, craft, knit….. you name it, and I'm a wildlife biologist so I'm constantly going new places and getting work with really cool animals and really cool people. I'm also a photographer on the side; something that started with taking a few photos for a friend after she saw my nature shots and the word has been passed around and now I shoot a lot of photos for people and I love it.

I'm a fairly restless individual. I always want to be doing or learning something new. My husband would call me a serial hobbiest and I would would agree with that.

Anyway, I have put that horrible chapter of my life behind me and I'm pretty content with the way things are right now. I have my fresh start and it feels good. My husband and I just bought a great house outside of town on a little over an acre and I'm finally getting to build that backyard homestead I've always wanted. We just got 8 baby chickens and we're anxiously waiting for spring when we can start the garden.

So I'm happy and I'm ready to give this a shot again because I miss the inspiration I get from being out here in the open and sharing with others. So I'm ready to share my thoughts and ideas and I'm ready to learn from all of you out there!

Let this new adventure begin!

PS - be patient with me, I can't believe how much blogger has changed. There are so many things to know and change with these templates…..and I'm not the most tech savy individual :)
